Abuja, Nigeria — Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for its silence over what he described as the “unjust and unwarranted detention” of two lawyers representing detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore expressed disappointment that the NBA, under its president Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, has failed to publicly address the arrest and continued detention of Barrister Aloy Ejimakor and Barrister Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, both of whom have been vocal in defending Kanu’s legal rights.
“It is unfortunate that the Nigerian Bar Association has remained quiet regarding the unwarranted and unjust detention of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, Aloy Ejimakor and Barrister Okere Kingdom Nnamdi,” Sowore wrote.
“President @afamosigwe, what’s going on? #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.”
Sowore’s remarks have reignited debate among legal practitioners and human rights advocates, many of whom argue that the NBA’s silence undermines its constitutional duty to defend the rule of law and protect legal practitioners from state intimidation.
Several civil rights groups have since joined in condemning the arrests, urging the authorities to release the detained lawyers and uphold their right to legal representation.
Meanwhile, Stone Report News agents observed increased police and DSS presence around parts of Abuja, with patrol vans and security operatives seen moving in convoys — a development many believe is intended to intimidate activists and discourage protests linked to the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign.
