Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government over a disturbing new development in the fight against insurgency — the use of drones by Boko Haram terrorists to launch coordinated attacks in the North-East.

Governor Zulum raised the alarm while addressing security concerns in the state, noting that the insurgents’ growing technological capability poses a serious threat to national security and demands immediate federal intervention.

According to the Governor, Boko Haram and their affiliates have begun deploying surveillance and combat drones to monitor military movements and target strategic locations. He stressed that this advancement marks a dangerous shift in the group’s operational tactics and could undermine ongoing counterterrorism efforts if not addressed swiftly.

Zulum urged the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen aerial surveillance, improve intelligence sharing, and equip the Nigerian Armed Forces with modern counter-drone technology to neutralize the threat.

“This is not the time for complacency,” he warned. “The use of drones by terrorists changes the dynamics of this war. We need urgent federal support to counter this emerging threat before it escalates further.”

The Governor also called for greater collaboration between the military, state governments, and local communities to enhance intelligence gathering and strengthen border security, especially in areas prone to insurgent infiltration.

His warning comes amid renewed attacks in parts of Borno and neighbouring states, underscoring the evolving tactics of Boko Haram as they continue to challenge government forces despite years of counter-insurgency operations.
