The Edo State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into two deeply disturbing videos circulating across social media, which show young men in distressing and brutal conditions.
In one of the videos, a young man is seen lying on a hospital bed at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), with his hand reportedly severed from the wrist following a violent attack. Another clip shows a separate young man sitting on the ground, visibly battered, with what appears to be a severed hand placed on his head.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth behind the incidents and ensure that all individuals involved face justice.
According to a statement issued by ASP Eno Ikoedem, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for the Edo State Command, the police are urging the victims seen in the videos—or anyone who can identify or contact them—to reach out immediately to the Police Public Relations Office at the Command Headquarters in Benin City or call 08077773721 or 08037646272.
“The Command is determined to get to the root of this matter and will ensure that justice is served,” the statement read.
While assuring the public of its commitment to a transparent investigation, the Edo State Police Command appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic or disrupt ongoing inquiries.
The police also strongly condemned all forms of mob action, describing them as criminal and unjustifiable. Citizens were reminded that taking the law into their own hands amounts to jungle justice—an offence that will attract the full weight of the law.
The statement further reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across Edo State, emphasizing that credible information from members of the public would greatly assist the investigation.
“The Edo State Police Command remains resolute in ensuring the safety and security of every resident,” ASP Ikoedem concluded.
