The Nigerian Aviation Academy has called on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to urgently clamp down on uncertified drone operators across the country, citing growing safety and security concerns within the aviation and public airspace sectors.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the academy emphasized that the uncontrolled use of drones by untrained individuals poses serious risks to national security, aviation safety, and privacy. The institution noted that while drones have become valuable tools in sectors such as agriculture, surveillance, and filmmaking, their misuse by uncertified operators could lead to catastrophic incidents.
According to the academy, many individuals and organizations currently operate drones in Nigeria without any form of registration, training, or approval from the NCAA — a situation it described as “a ticking time bomb for both air safety and public security.”
The academy urged the NCAA to enforce stricter licensing and regulatory controls, including the establishment of a national database for drone operators and stiffer penalties for violators. “No one should be allowed to fly a drone without proper certification,” the statement read. “The airspace is a shared resource that must be protected through professional training, compliance, and strict enforcement.”
It further recommended that all drone users undergo accredited aviation safety courses to ensure operational competence, stressing that education and compliance are the keys to a safe and innovative drone industry.
Aviation analysts have long warned that the rapid growth of drone usage in Nigeria, particularly in urban areas and near airports, could lead to dangerous airspace violations if left unchecked.
The academy concluded by reaffirming its readiness to partner with the NCAA and other relevant agencies in developing training modules and safety frameworks to strengthen drone regulation and protect Nigeria’s airspace integrity.
