The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed the Cherubim and Seraphim King of Kings Church located at No. 24, Georgius Cole Street, Ifako Ijaye, following repeated violations of noise regulations. The closure comes on the directive of State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, after the church disregarded multiple peace agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed with the agency in 2017 and 2023.
Speaking on the enforcement, LASEPA General Manager, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, explained that the church had consistently violated the terms of agreements aimed at minimizing noise in the residential area. “The church was operating illegally within a residential estate and failed to comply with agreements in 2017, 2023, and 2025 designed to protect residents’ health and maintain peace,” Ajayi stated.
The MOUs required measures such as soundproofing the church, limiting musical instruments to Sunday services, restricting night vigils, and maintaining permissible noise levels of 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. Despite repeated sensitization programs and warnings, the church continued to operate outside these limits.
Ajayi stressed that while freedom of worship is respected in Lagos State, no individual or organization is allowed to infringe upon the fundamental rights of others or endanger public health. He warned that the government would not hesitate to shut down and prosecute any organization violating the State Environmental Law 2018, as amended.
The agency also urged all residents, religious organizations, and businesses to comply with environmental regulations to ensure a peaceful, healthy, and sustainable living environment across Lagos State.
