The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a nationwide indefinite strike beginning October 31, 2025, raising serious concerns about potential disruptions to healthcare services in public hospitals across the country.
In a statement released by the association, NARD highlighted ongoing grievances related to poor working conditions, delayed salaries, and inadequate welfare provisions for resident doctors, stressing that the strike is a last resort after repeated attempts at negotiation with relevant authorities.
The association warned that the industrial action could lead to significant interruptions in patient care, particularly in teaching hospitals where resident doctors form the backbone of medical service delivery. Emergency services may also face operational challenges, with patients advised to seek alternative healthcare arrangements where possible.
Reacting to the announcement, healthcare stakeholders and civil society organizations have called for urgent dialogue between NARD and the Federal Government to avert a full-scale healthcare crisis. Meanwhile, hospital administrators are reportedly preparing contingency measures to mitigate the impact of the strike.
NARD has urged government agencies to engage constructively with resident doctors, emphasizing that addressing their concerns is critical to safeguarding Nigeria’s public health system.
