As part of preparations for upcoming elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wrapped up the final phase of its Readiness Assessment Tour in Anambra State. A four-member delegation from INEC Headquarters, alongside the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Anambra State, Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, and senior officials from the State Office, visited several designated centers where the Mock Accreditation Exercise was underway.
During the visit to various centers in Anambra East Local Government Area, the team closely monitored the accreditation process, noting that the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices were functioning optimally, enabling a seamless and efficient process for voters.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, Dr. Kenneth Ukeagu, National Commissioner supervising Anambra State, said, “We are 99% ready. The only remaining task is to move our staff and materials to the polling units. We have met with relevant stakeholders and concluded our plans. Provisions have been made for hiring boats where necessary, so in terms of logistics, we are ready. The PVC collection is ongoing in all designated centers and will come to an end tomorrow.”
National Commissioner Mr. Sam Olumekun, mni, also assured that all accredited media personnel would be properly identified and protected during the elections. “All the 540 media personnel that will participate in the election will receive their tags, and adequate protection will be extended to them. We are deploying about 24,000 personnel for this election across different categories,” he said.
The INEC delegation expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by state officials and praised the positive feedback from voters who participated in the mock exercise.
The visit underscores INEC’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, while confirming that logistical and operational arrangements are in place across the state.
