LAGOS, Nigeria — Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has revealed that his United States visa has been permanently revoked by the U.S. government.

Speaking during a media parley in Lagos on Tuesday, Soyinka said he received an official notification of the revocation on Thursday, October 23, and proceeded to read the letter aloud to journalists present.

According to the literary icon, the U.S. authorities gave no explicit reason for the decision, but the notice stated that the revocation was “permanent and irreversible.”

The 1986 Nobel Prize winner in Literature, known globally for his activism and advocacy for democracy, described the decision as “an unexpected development,” adding that he has visited the United States for decades for academic, literary, and human rights engagements.

“I have travelled to that country for over half a century — for lectures, for teaching, for conferences — but suddenly, this letter came, revoking my visa permanently,” Soyinka said.

He noted that while he had no immediate plans to visit the U.S., the decision raises questions about freedom of expression and political sensitivity in international relations.

As of press time, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria had not issued an official statement regarding the revocation.
