A High Court in Abuja has convicted Yusuf Baba for dangerous driving after a June 10, 2025 incident in which he fled from Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) operatives, crashed into an FRSC patrol vehicle and another motorist’s car, and attempted to escape arrest.
Judgment delivered on 29 October 2025 sentenced Baba to three months imprisonment (or an option to pay a ₦50,000 fine). The court also ordered him to pay ₦3,190,000 in compensation for damage to the FRSC patrol vehicle and other impounded vehicles. His driver’s licence was suspended for three months. He was discharged on a separate count of assaulting a marshal.
According to court papers and FRSC accounts, operatives had stopped Baba under Dantata Bridge, Abuja, for overloading during a mobile court session. Rather than comply, he accelerated, lost control, and collided with the enforcement vehicle and a third party’s car. He was later arrested at Major Filling Station, CITEC Road, and charged with two counts — Dangerous Driving and Assaulting a Marshal on Duty. The prosecution secured a conviction on the dangerous driving charge.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, mni, applauded the ruling, calling it a precedent that reinforces the FRSC’s authority and its zero-tolerance stance on reckless behaviour that endangers road users and enforcement officers. “This judgment has once again proven that the era of impunity on our roads is over,” he said, praising the judiciary and the Corps’ legal team for their resolve.
The FRSC used the verdict to renew its appeal to motorists to obey traffic laws, respect patrol officers, and drive responsibly, warning that the Corps will continue to enforce road safety rules and pursue accountability for those who put lives at risk.
The announcement was issued through the Corps’ public education office and signed by Olusegun Ogungbemide, mni, FISPON, ANIPR, Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer at FRSC Headquarters, Abuja (cpeo@frsc.gov.ng / info@frsc.gov.ng) on 29 October 2025.
