The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, closed the gong at the Nigeria Exchange Market (NGX) to commemorate Lagos Fashion Week — an event celebrating creativity, enterprise, and the fashion industry’s growing role in driving sustainable economic transformation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by members of his cabinet, was joined by Grammy Award-winning international superstar Ciara Princess Wilson, who arrived in Lagos on Thursday to participate in the Fashion Week activities, held from October 30 to November 2.

Lagos Fashion Week, founded by Tokunbo and Yemi Akerele, has, for over 15 years, projected Nigerian fashion trends to the global market and promoted local brands and woven designs.

Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu described the platform as a convergence of business and innovation, highlighting how it places the creativity of Lagos entrepreneurs before the world.

“Our administration is committed to supporting people who are curating an ecosystem that will push locally created brands to the global market,” the Governor said. “Africa is the next continent that will drive the global economy in the next 30 years, and in Nigeria, Lagos represents that dream — a hub of innovation, youth energy, and economic growth.”

He noted that fashion serves as a major driver of tourism and investment, adding that the collaboration with the NGX has created new avenues for fashion entrepreneurs to thrive globally.

“The Fashion Week speaks to both business and innovation,” Sanwo-Olu continued. “It is leveraging fashion as a strong enabler and repository of knowledge. We are happy that the NGX has discovered the untapped potential in this market.”

He pledged continued government support through policies aimed at unlocking access to finance and opportunities for creative entrepreneurs.

The Chairman of NGX Group, Dr. Umaru Kwairanga, praised the Lagos Fashion Week initiative for nurturing creative excellence and innovation. He said the NGX Growth Board was designed to empower fashion, design, and creative service businesses to raise capital, strengthen governance, and attract investors.

“The Growth Board helps SMEs formalise, expand, and build resilience,” Kwairanga said. “We are committed to including more creative sector participants in the capital market to help them raise funds, own shares, and contribute to national economic growth.”

In her remarks, Ciara expressed excitement about being part of the event and promised to use her global platform to showcase the beauty and creativity of Lagos and African fashion.

“I’m honoured to be part of this mission to promote African fashion,” she said. “From the moment I landed in Lagos, I’ve seen the evolution of this city — its energy, creativity, and growth. It’s inspiring, and I’m proud to witness it.”

The Lagos Fashion Week continues to cement Lagos as a global centre of creativity and innovation, bridging fashion, finance, and culture in a dynamic expression of modern African enterprise.
