Nigeria’s power sector is facing renewed scrutiny as Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed that more than 10,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity remain idle across generation plants nationwide, even as millions of Nigerians continue to suffer from chronic blackouts.

Adelabu described the situation as a shocking display of waste and inefficiency, stressing that over 10 gigawatts of generation capacity are stranded due to system failures and poor infrastructure. He highlighted that despite the nation’s massive power potential, technical challenges and infrastructural weaknesses prevent electricity from reaching homes and businesses effectively.

The minister’s disclosure comes amid ongoing public frustration over inconsistent power supply, which has hindered economic activities and daily life across the country. Adelabu’s statement has renewed calls for urgent reforms and investments in the transmission and distribution networks to ensure that available electricity is effectively harnessed and delivered to consumers.

Observers note that unlocking the idle generation capacity could significantly reduce blackouts, boost industrial productivity, and support economic growth if combined with strategic investments and proper maintenance of the power infrastructure.
