Amnesty International has issued a strong condemnation of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, over what it described as “outrageous threats” against activist and politician Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the human rights organization said the Commissioner’s declaration of Sowore as “wanted” amounts to a gross abuse of power, accusing him of using his position to intimidate and suppress dissent.

“Declaring Sowore ‘wanted’ is a clear abuse of power loaded with intimidation and disregard for human rights,” Amnesty International said.

The organization urged Commissioner Jimoh to immediately withdraw his threats and focus instead on his constitutional duty of ensuring citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are respected.

“The CP must immediately withdraw these threats and do his actual job — which is facilitating and upholding the right to peaceful protest,” the statement added.

The group emphasized that peaceful protest is a fundamental human right guaranteed by both Nigeria’s Constitution and international law, warning that continued harassment of activists would further erode public trust in law enforcement institutions.
