Abuja, Nigeria – In commemoration of the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, themed “Fund Resilience, Not Disaster”, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), organized a high-level workshop on Climate Adaptation with a Focus on Flood Disaster Management.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from government institutions, development partners, and community-based organizations to share knowledge, discuss strategies, and strengthen coordination mechanisms for effective flood disaster management in Nigeria.

Representing NEMA Director General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Dr. Evans Ugoh, Deputy Director in the Department of Disaster Risk Reduction, said the workshop was convened to gather insights on the impact of climate change, national vulnerabilities, and existing adaptation measures. He emphasized that the session would inform a future training program on flood disaster management.

“The engagement aims to explore actionable strategies that will enhance resilience and community preparedness against floods,” Dr. Ugoh stated.

In his welcome address, Mr. Ishigame, Chief Representative of JICA Nigeria, highlighted the urgency of climate adaptation efforts and noted that the workshop provided a platform to examine vulnerabilities, share lessons from recent flood experiences, and strengthen coordination among agencies.

Key presentations included:

  • Mr. Isa Abdul Kasir, Chief Disaster Risk Reduction Officer at NEMA, who detailed the 2025 Flood Disaster Management Strategy, emphasizing adaptation strategies, early warning systems, and stakeholder coordination.

  • Abba G. Idris, PhD, who spoke on climate adaptation and disaster management.

  • Engr. Abdurrahman, DG of FEMA, who presented on recent flood recovery and reconstruction efforts in the Federal Capital Territory.

The workshop featured two technical sessions focused on climate change adaptation, community resilience, and coordination frameworks to strengthen Nigeria’s flood management capacity.

Officials highlighted the importance of multi-level collaboration and proactive planning to build a resilient and disaster-ready nation.

This initiative underscores Nigeria’s commitment to disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation, aligning with international best practices and global efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate-related hazards.
