The Managing Director of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, has urged parents in Ogun State to encourage their children to take advantage of the federal government’s education loan scheme introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking during a sensitisation programme in Ijebu Ife, Ijebu East Local Government Area, Sawyerr said the President’s vision is to ensure that no Nigerian is denied access to education due to financial hardship.

He revealed that since the scheme’s commencement in 2024, NELFUND has disbursed over ₦116 billion in tuition fees and monthly upkeep allowances to students across the country — a milestone he described as a major step toward reducing inequality in education.

Sawyerr explained that the fund was established to ease the financial burden on parents while helping Nigerian youths secure their future through affordable learning opportunities.

He encouraged parents to spread awareness and ensure that their children in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education apply for the loan, stressing that education remains the strongest foundation for national development.

“President Tinubu is committed to improving lives through education,” Sawyerr said. “Developed nations succeeded because they invested in knowledge, not background or race.”

The Executive Director of Finance and Administration at NELFUND, Dr. Frederick Akinfala, also addressed misconceptions about the programme. He clarified that no student’s certificate would be withheld, and repayment begins two years after graduation, at 10% of the beneficiary’s salary.

Akinfala added that unemployed graduates can defer repayment by notifying the fund, emphasizing that the initiative was designed to empower, not burden, Nigerian students.

Appreciating the sensitisation drive, Ijebu East Council Chairman, Dr. Dare Kehinde, commended the federal government for its bold investment in education and pledged local support by establishing a help centre to guide students through the loan application process.

The event, which attracted parents, teachers, and community leaders, reflected growing confidence that education financing in Nigeria may finally be turning a new page — one where dreams are no longer cut short by poverty, but sustained by opportunity.
