Abuja – Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged Nigerians to prepare for the 2027 elections, emphasizing the importance of massive voter turnout to prevent President Bola Tinubu from securing a second term.

Speaking at the fifth anniversary lecture of First Daily newspaper in Abuja, Amaechi highlighted that Tinubu’s defeat in Lagos State in 2023 proves that the president is not invincible.

“If Tinubu is that invincible, how was he defeated in Lagos? It can be repeated but first and foremost you must agree that the man there is not invincible. The problem is the opposition,” Amaechi said.

The event, which was chaired by former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, carried the theme: ‘2027: How can we make our votes count?’

Amaechi warned that voter apathy and complacency are major obstacles to free and fair elections.

“The first solution to electoral reform is not the government. The people are the problem. The more you say they have written the results, the more you have voter apathy. Voter apathy will make President Bola Tinubu return to Villa,” he stated.

He called on citizens to take control of the electoral process, stressing the power of participation:

“Tell the people the power is in your hands. Come out.”

On the issue of electoral reforms, Amaechi argued that expecting the incumbent government to lead change is unrealistic.

“The problem with election in Nigeria is that there is no incumbent government that can achieve electoral reform. None. We already tried it and failed,” he said.

Amaechi also criticized opposition parties for lacking focus and viable strategies, suggesting internal divisions weaken their ability to challenge the ruling elite.

“I tell the opposition parties that you’re the problem. The opposition party is not discussing how to save Nigeria. Nobody is saying oh things are bad, how do we change the candidate,” he said.

Earlier, Dickson condemned manipulation of elections, describing it as a direct attack on democracy.

“The subversion of the people’s sovereignty through rigged elections is the worst coup against democracy,” he said.

Amaechi’s message underscores the need for Nigerians to actively engage in the electoral process to ensure their votes count in 2027.
