The Edo State Police Command has arrested 21 students of Ogioma Public Secondary School, aged between 14 and 17, over an alleged attempt to launch a violent cult-related attack on another school in Benin City. According to the police, the incident occurred on 12th November, 2025, at about 1:45 p.m.

Police spokesman, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, said the command acted swiftly after receiving credible intelligence that a group of suspected cult members from Ogioma Public Secondary School were mobilising to attack Osemwende Public Secondary School, located at Oghoghibi off Benin–Sapele Road.

Operatives from the Loveworld Division moved quickly to the scene, where the students were said to have arrived in a convoy of motorcycles in an alleged attempt to carry out violent acts. The police immediately intercepted the group and arrested 21 students, while several others escaped.

Among those arrested are students aged 13 to 17, including Promise Afekokhian, Samuel John, Godstime Sunday, Basit Kareem, Destiny Lucky, Miracle Peter, Victor Innocent, Osazee Efe, Usman Adamu, Orodge Miracle, Godspower Agharevba, Favour Ogunde, Clinton Oghenetega, Wisdom Ehimen, Zenith Jonathan, Steven Monday, Ogbebor Calistus, Marvelous Imadefe, Success Ogar, Osaro Osama Praise and Miracle Bassey.

The police recovered three knives from the suspects. Preliminary findings also revealed that the group had earlier circulated a threatening voice note in which they “boasted of plans to ‘stage a war,’ burn down the school, and harm students and staff,” a threat they attempted to act on before police intervention stopped them.

Both school principals have been invited for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. The arrested students have already been arraigned in court. Eight of them were remanded, while the remaining 13 were released to their parents or guardians, who are required to present them again on 28th November 2025 for the next court hearing.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, used the incident as a warning to parents and guardians. He urged them to “pay closer attention to the activities and associations of their children,” especially within school environments. He also called on school authorities to strengthen discipline, report any suspicious behaviour promptly, and work closely with law enforcement to prevent juvenile crime.

Yamu emphasized that the command remains committed to ensuring safety in schools across the state, stating that the action aligns with the Nigeria Police Force’s Safe Schools Initiative.
