In a major move to make Nigerian roads safer, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has signed an important agreement with the International Road Assessment Program (iRAP), a worldwide initiative that evaluates road safety and rates roads based on their safety features. This partnership marks the beginning of the Nigeria Road Assessment Program (NigeriaRAP), aimed at reducing road accidents and saving lives across the country.

The signing ceremony took place on November 18, 2025, during the 3-Day International Road Crash Victims Africa Conference held at the Body of Benchers Complex in Jabi, Abuja. The agreement was formally presented to Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

This partnership is seen as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to cut down road crashes and fatalities. Under the agreement, the FRSC will use iRAP’s advanced technology and expertise to assess the safety of Nigeria’s roads, identify danger spots, and develop targeted safety measures. The goal is to make roads safer for everyone, whether they are drivers, passengers, pedestrians, or cyclists.

Nigeria has committed to reducing road fatalities by 50% by the year 2030, aligning with global efforts under the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety. Key targets include ensuring that all new roads meet high safety standards or achieve at least a 3-star rating, and that more than 75% of travel on existing roads occurs on roads meeting these safety standards by 2030.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed excitement about the partnership, emphasizing Nigeria’s dedication to improving road safety. He stated that this agreement shows Nigeria’s strong commitment to making roads safer and improving the safety of all road users.

Representing iRAP, CEO Greg Smith, through Nathalie Chiavassa, welcomed Nigeria as the newest country in Africa to join the program, praising the FRSC’s efforts. Chiavassa said she was delighted to partner with Nigeria to help reduce road crashes and save lives.

President Tinubu also praised both FRSC and iRAP for their efforts, highlighting that improving road safety is vital for Nigeria’s development and economic growth. The partnership is expected to bring about significant improvements in road safety, which will save lives and help boost Nigeria’s economy.

The agreement was signed by Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Assistant Corps Marshal and Head of Public Education at FRSC, based in Abuja. The official contact emails for more information are cpeo@frsc.gov.ng and info@frsc.gov.ng.

This important development was announced on November 20, 2025, showing Nigeria’s commitment to safer roads for all.
