On November 23, 2025, Nigeria made history in the world of winter sports. The team of Simidele Adeagbo and Kewe King competed in their very first 2-woman bobsleigh race at the World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. This was Nigeria’s first-ever participation in a 2-woman bobsleigh race at the prestigious World Cup level.
Simidele Adeagbo has already broken several barriers before this race. She became the first African to compete in bobsleigh at the IBSF World Championships, and she also made history as the first African athlete to win an international sled race. Now, together with Kewe King, they are part of Africa’s first 2-woman bobsleigh team to compete in an IBSF World Cup event.
Their participation is seen as a major breakthrough for Africa in winter sports, which are traditionally dominated by countries with colder climates. The Nigerian National Sports Commission praised their bravery and resilience, emphasizing that their race is more than just a competition—it’s a symbol of new opportunities for winter sports athletes across Africa.
This achievement shows the growing presence and potential of Nigeria and Africa in global winter sports competitions, inspiring many young athletes across the continent to pursue their dreams in sports traditionally considered outside Africa’s sporting landscape.
