The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet on Monday in a last-minute attempt to halt a looming nationwide strike that could once again disrupt academic activities across public universities.

The planned meeting comes amid growing tension on campuses, where unresolved issues between both parties — including funding shortfalls, welfare concerns, and unmet agreements — continue to fuel fears of another shutdown. For many students and parents, the possibility of a fresh strike threatens to derail academic calendars, prolong graduations, and deepen frustration within Nigeria’s troubled tertiary education sector.

Government officials say Monday’s talks are aimed at averting industrial action and restoring confidence in negotiations. However, past attempts to resolve the long-standing disputes have often led to temporary relief without durable solutions, raising questions about whether this round of dialogue will bring meaningful progress.

With Monday now set as a decisive moment, stakeholders across the education sector are watching closely, hoping the discussions will deliver a breakthrough that protects students, stabilizes learning, and ends the recurring cycle of strike threats in Nigerian universities.
