The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has dismissed claims made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that a private company, Xpress Payments, has exclusive rights to Nigeria’s revenue collection process.
In a statement, Aderonke Atoyebi, FIRS’s spokesperson on broadcast media, described Atiku’s comments as misleading and capable of politicizing a technical and administrative matter. The FIRS clarified that it does not rely on a single platform for collecting government revenue, and no company has monopoly or special control over the process.
The agency explained that it operates a multi-channel system involving several payment platforms, including Quickteller, Remita, Etranzact, Flutterwave, and XpressPay. These platforms form a transparent and competitive ecosystem designed to make paying taxes easier for Nigerians across the country.
The FIRS emphasized that these platforms are not agents collecting revenue on behalf of the government, nor do they earn a percentage of the collections. All payments made through them go directly into Nigeria’s Federation Account, with no diversion or private control involved.
Atoyebi added that the system has been expanded to include multiple payment providers, with better monitoring to ensure accountability and encourage innovation in Nigeria’s financial technology sector. The onboarding process for these platforms is transparent and fair, giving equal opportunity to all operators.
The FIRS also stated that ongoing tax reforms, led by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, are essential for Nigeria’s economic growth and should not be politicized. The agency called on political actors, including Atiku, to avoid spreading false information or raising unnecessary alarms over routine administrative procedures.
Finally, the FIRS reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and improving Nigeria’s revenue collection system for the benefit of all citizens.
