The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three key suspects linked to the deadly assault on Anwule community in Ohimini Local Government Area, where several residents—including a pastor—were brutally murdered.
The suspects, identified as Isah Peter, Moses Peter (both from Agatu LGA), and a Fulani herdsman whose name has not yet been released, were apprehended following intensified police operations in the area. The arrests mark the first major breakthrough since the shocking attack that left the community devastated and demanding justice.
According to police sources, one of the suspects, Isah Peter, was the acting commander of the Eguma community vigilante group. Investigators believe he played a central role in the assault, allegedly deploying a community-owned firearm during the operation in Anwule. His involvement, authorities say, points to a troubling misuse of local security structures and raises deeper questions about internal compromises within community vigilante outfits.
Residents of Anwule, still mourning the loss of loved ones, have called for swift prosecution and stronger security presence to prevent further attacks. The killings have reignited concerns about escalating violence in rural Benue, where communities continue to grapple with armed incursions, clashes, and criminal infiltration.
Police officials say investigations are ongoing, with efforts now focused on tracking additional collaborators and recovering weapons used during the attack.
The state government has yet to issue an official statement, but pressure is mounting for decisive action to restore confidence and protect vulnerable communities across the region.
