Norwich, UK — Tragedy struck at Somerleyton House in Norwich early Saturday morning when Uchenna “Uche” Okirie, a Nigerian man in his 30s, was stabbed to death inside a student accommodation block. Emergency services were called around 5:00 a.m., but despite paramedics’ efforts, Okirie succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Okirie, a volunteer with the British Red Cross and reportedly a current or former postgraduate student at the University of East Anglia (UEA), had previously published research on the impact of climate change on health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. Social media accounts indicate he also served as an international student ambassador for Nigeria.
Police launched a murder investigation, and 27-year-old Congolese national Benjamin Katabana was arrested and charged in connection with the stabbing. He is expected to appear before Norwich Magistrates’ Court.
Residents of the accommodation described being woken by a fire alarm and noticing multiple police cars before any ambulance arrived, highlighting the severity of the situation.
In response, the University of East Anglia confirmed it had contacted all known students living at the residence and pledged to offer full support during this difficult period.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident as the local community reels from the shocking loss of the young student.
