The Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lagos State Command, Mr. E.G. Wori, has issued a strong advisory to 2025 Batch C Corps Members, urging them to adopt personal security as a compulsory, everyday responsibility throughout their service year.
Speaking during a comprehensive security sensitisation session at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, Mr. Wori underscored that Nigeria’s evolving security environment demands heightened vigilance from young graduates who may be posted to unfamiliar communities across the country.
He warned that complacency remains one of the leading factors that expose youths to preventable danger.
“Your safety begins with you. Be conscious of your surroundings, be mindful of the company you keep, and avoid movements that put you in harm’s way,” he stressed.
Mr. Wori outlined a number of security red flags corps members must pay attention to, including unusual movements in their lodges, persistent strangers observing their routines, suspicious vehicles trailing them, and invitations to isolated locations. He urged them to adopt a “trust but verify” mindset and report irregularities immediately to security personnel or camp officials.
He also highlighted emerging threats such as online fraud, identity theft, radicalisation through social media, and the growing trend of criminals targeting new corps members who are often unfamiliar with their host environments.
“Do not overshare your personal information on social media. Avoid flaunting valuables. Criminals now study your online behaviour before making a move,” he cautioned.
The DSS official further advised corps members to maintain a low profile while in transit, remain cautious when using ride-hailing services, and ensure their phones are always charged for emergency communication.
In addition, he encouraged them to familiarise themselves with emergency hotlines, cooperate with local security formations, and always inform trusted persons about their movements.
Camp authorities commended the Lagos DSS Command for its consistent support and emphasised that such enlightenment sessions are vital for preparing corps members for realities outside the controlled camp environment.
The NYSC management reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaborations with security agencies to guarantee the safety and well-being of all corps members during and after orientation.
The 2025 Batch C corps members expressed appreciation for the insights, noting that the session provided a clearer understanding of potential risks and the practical steps they must take to stay safe.
