In the aftermath of last week’s mass abduction in Niger State, 20,468 schools across seven northern states have been ordered to close indefinitely, Amnesty International Nigeria has reported.

The organization warned that the closures will have a widespread and devastating impact on the education and overall well-being of millions of children in the affected regions. The indefinite suspension of academic activities interrupts learning, disrupts childhood development, and heightens the vulnerability of students to social and economic risks.

Amnesty International’s statement underscores the urgent need for coordinated action by authorities to ensure the safety of students while mitigating the long-term consequences of such prolonged school closures.

The ongoing insecurity in northern Nigeria continues to pose serious challenges to education, as families and communities struggle to balance safety concerns with the critical need for continued learning.
