The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), for questioning over a series of high-profile financial controversies linked to his tenure as Nigeria’s chief law officer. The development comes just days after Malami publicly declared his ambition to contest the Kebbi State governorship election in 2027, a move that immediately reignited public scrutiny of his stewardship.

Concerns raised by Kebbi residents prompted fresh attention to lingering allegations from 2023, when the EFCC reportedly began probing five suspicious transactions executed under Malami’s watch.

Central to the investigation is the mysterious $496 million payment to Global Steel Holdings Ltd (GSHL) as settlement for the Ajaokuta Steel concession—despite reports that the company had already waived its compensation claims nine years earlier.
Also under review is Malami’s role in the sale of forfeited assets worth billions of naira, a process critics say lacked transparency.

The EFCC is further probing his involvement in the $419 million judgment debt paid to consultants who claimed they assisted in securing Paris Club refunds for state governments. Another critical issue is the $200 million compensation agreement with Sunrise Power in the long-running dispute over the Mambilla Power Project.

Investigators are also examining allegations of duplicated legal fees in the transfer of the $321 million Abacha loot from Switzerland to Nigeria, a case that raised questions about due process and accountability.

Malami has not yet made a public statement regarding the fresh invitation, but EFCC sources say the questioning aims to establish clarity on financial decisions that have had lasting implications for Nigeria’s economy.

His summons marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s ongoing push for transparency in public service, especially as the country enters another politically charged season.
