The Federal Government has launched a sharp criticism of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of playing a role in the early spread of terrorism in Nigeria by failing to act decisively when extremist activities first began to surface. The remarks were issued by presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare, who argued that Obasanjo’s administration “looked the other way when early signs of terror were emerging,” creating conditions that later enabled insurgency to flourish and destabilise parts of the country.
Dare asserted that during Obasanjo’s tenure, security warnings and intelligence signals were reportedly downplayed, leaving extremist ideologies to take root and evolve into organised terror networks in the years that followed. According to him, this historical lapse cannot be ignored in discussing the roots of Nigeria’s security challenges. He added that those now criticising the government’s security strategy were in fact part of the environment that allowed the threat to expand unchecked.
The presidential spokesperson also accused Obasanjo and other perennial presidential aspirants of deliberately portraying the present administration as weak on security in order to gain political mileage. He dismissed such attacks as opportunistic and misleading, describing them as “political posturing divorced from historical facts.” Dare insisted that the Tinubu administration has been proactive in addressing insecurity through reinforced counter-terrorism efforts, increased military coordination, and intelligence-based operations.
The Presidency further emphasised that current efforts to secure the nation are grounded in data-driven strategies, improved defence partnerships, and operational transparency aimed at delivering sustainable peace. It urged political leaders to avoid rewriting history or weaponising national security for political purposes, stressing that Nigeria’s complex security situation is the product of multiple past failures which must be acknowledged honestly.
As the debate over responsibility and accountability continues, the government maintained that it remains committed to confronting terrorism, safeguarding citizens, and strengthening national security mechanisms—while challenging critics to engage responsibly in the discourse rather than resorting to sensational narratives or selective memory.
