Ngor Okpala, Imo State – Panic and fear have gripped communities along the Ihitte Okwe stretch of the Owerri-Aba road after gunmen abducted 14 passengers from a commercial bus late Monday or early Tuesday near Sam Mbakwe Airport.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that drivers abandoned their vehicles as the attackers intercepted the bus, leaving commuters stranded and anxious. The highway, already notorious for violent incidents, recalls a similar attack in May when gunmen killed a driver and kidnapped 26 passengers.
As residents grapple with repeated security breaches, the Imo State Police has yet to release an official statement, and no group has claimed responsibility for the latest abduction. Families of the victims are left in uncertainty, highlighting the broader insecurity affecting daily commuters.
The attack raises critical questions about the safety of public roads in Imo State, with local communities increasingly wary of traveling and demanding stronger security measures.
Stone Reporters Observed that this latest attack on the Owerri-Aba highway underscores a recurring pattern of violence that has plagued the region for months. Despite previous incidents, there appears to be a gap in preventive measures and timely intelligence, leaving travelers vulnerable. The absence of official police communication compounds the fear, suggesting that without a more proactive and visible security presence, the cycle of abductions and roadside attacks is likely to persist. This trend not only disrupts the daily lives of residents but also threatens commerce and mobility in one of the state’s key transport corridors.
