Lagos State has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening economic and technological cooperation with the Russian Federation, highlighting the city’s pivotal role as Nigeria’s economic hub.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, made the statement during a courtesy visit by the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Andrey L. Podelyshev, at the Deputy Governor’s official residence in Ikoyi. The meeting focused on exploring bilateral partnerships in energy, technology, infrastructure, and other critical sectors.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos, which contributes roughly 30% of Nigeria’s GDP, is strategically positioned as a gateway for international cooperation and investment. He expressed particular interest in Russia’s proposals for advanced technological and energy solutions, including digital innovations, solar power systems, and floating nuclear power plants with capacities ranging from 100 to 200 MW and operational lifespans of up to 60 years.

The Governor highlighted that Lagos’ unique geography, with 30% of its landmass covered by water, makes floating energy solutions particularly relevant. He also confirmed that the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperative, Trade, and Industry is actively engaging with Russian counterparts, including discussions on the Lekki Free Trade Zone, to promote investment and industrial growth.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Podelyshev underscored Russia’s interest in strengthening economic and technological ties with Lagos. He suggested exploring partner-city or sister-city cooperation with Russian cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, noting similarities in urban infrastructure, transport, utilities, and social service challenges. He further identified opportunities for collaboration in Artificial Intelligence, education, economy, infrastructure, and power, emphasizing that such partnerships could spur mutual development.

> “In this regard, we must consider it reasonable to explore bilateral ties along the Russia-Lagos or St. Petersburg–Lagos lines, including the establishment of partner-city or sister-city cooperation,” Podelyshev said.
“The partnership will provide more development in different areas in both countries.”

Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism that the proposed collaboration would introduce innovative solutions to Lagos’ growing urban and energy needs, strengthening the state’s global competitiveness and fostering sustainable economic growth.
