The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has moved to distance itself from several prominent members, including Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, as well as party elders such as Chief Bode George, former Minister of Special Duties Tanimu Turaki, and former Deputy National Chairman Taofeek Arapaja, in what appears to be one of the strongest signals yet of the deepening rifts within the opposition party.

According to a statement attributed to top PDP officials, the party leadership expressed concern over what it described as actions and public positions taken by the affected individuals which, in its view, conflict with the collective interest and established structures of the party. Although the PDP did not announce formal sanctions, its public disavowal marks a significant escalation in long-simmering internal disagreements over party direction, leadership loyalty, and strategic decisions ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

The development follows a series of public disagreements involving key bloc leaders within the PDP, with factions accusing one another of deviating from long-standing party principles. Party sources suggest that recent political alignments, contrasting statements on national issues, and alleged anti-party activities may have contributed to the decision to openly distance the PDP from some of its most recognizable figures.

Insiders also indicate that ongoing negotiations to reconcile feuding camps have stalled, despite repeated appeals from the Board of Trustees and elder statesmen urging unity. The party’s national leadership, however, insists that maintaining internal discipline and ideological cohesion remains paramount, particularly as it positions itself to challenge for national relevance.

Reactions from those named in the statement were still unfolding at press time, with political observers noting that the PDP may be entering a critical phase that will determine its stability, influence, and readiness for future elections. While it remains unclear whether further disciplinary actions will follow, the public nature of the disavowal has already heightened tensions within the party’s national structure.

Analysts warn that unless urgent reconciliation efforts are undertaken, the party risks deeper fragmentation that could affect its performance and credibility in the months ahead.
