The Delta State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Halilu Hamidu, has issued a strong appeal to Nigerian youths to steer clear of drug abuse and trafficking as the Christmas and New Year festivities approach.
Hamidu noted that the festive period, often marked by celebrations and heightened social activities, can also expose young people to risky behaviours, including experimentation with illicit substances. He stressed that Christmas should remain a period of joy, reflection, and togetherness, not a time when young people fall victim to destructive habits.
According to him, the agency has observed a pattern where criminal networks attempt to exploit the holiday season to recruit unsuspecting youths into drug courier activities. He warned that such involvement carries severe legal and health consequences.
> “Christmas is a season of joy, peace, and positive reflection,” Hamidu said. “We urge our youths to celebrate responsibly, avoid harmful substances, and resist any pressure to engage in drug trafficking. The dangers are real, and the consequences can destroy a promising future.”
The Commander further reassured residents that NDLEA operatives will intensify surveillance and enforcement across the state throughout the holiday season. He urged parents, guardians, community leaders, and religious organisations to play active roles in counselling young people and promoting a drug-free society.
Hamidu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting the public from the harmful effects of drugs and encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities as part of collective efforts to curb the menace.
