Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, has launched a full-scale investigation into the disturbing allegation that a patient, Mr. Joshua Afolayan, had his kidney removed during a recent surgical procedure at the facility. The Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Management, Dr. Adedamola Dada, announced the constitution of a seven-member panel of enquiry tasked with uncovering the facts surrounding the case.
The committee is chaired by Prof. Francis Faduyile, a renowned anatomic pathologist from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Other members include Prof. Patrick Temi Adegun of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Dr. Henry Abiyere of the Federal Teaching Hospital Ido-Ekiti, media professional Dr. Adebola Adeniyi-Agbaje, the Ekiti State CAN Chairman Reverend Emmanuel Aribasoye, and High Chief Babatunde Akindele, the Elemo of Ado-Ekiti. The panel’s secretary is Barrister Adebayo Titilayo, Legal Adviser to the State Ministry of Health.
The hospital has given the committee ten days to conclude its review and submit a comprehensive report. Management assured the public that the inquiry will be thorough, transparent, and devoid of institutional bias, stressing that members of the panel were selected for their independence, integrity, and community trust.
Reassuring anxious residents, the hospital emphasized that determining the truth is a priority and pledged full cooperation while urging all affected parties, witnesses, and the general public to assist the panel in its work.
Similar controversies over alleged organ removal have surfaced in parts of Nigeria over the past three months, including claims in Ondo and Plateau states that later turned out to be complications from untreated infections or misinterpreted medical procedures. Such incidents often trigger public fear, making independent verification essential to prevent misinformation.
A professional observation suggests that the inclusion of medical experts, community leaders, clergy, media professionals, and legal representation signals an attempt to restore confidence in the hospital’s processes. The tight ten-day timeline also indicates the urgency placed on resolving the matter before it fuels further speculation.
In conclusion, all eyes remain on the panel as the state anticipates a clear and credible account of what transpired during Mr. Afolayan’s procedure, with expectations that the findings will either correct a grave concern or expose malpractice requiring decisive action.
