The Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria (PEDAN), Anambra chapter, has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to intervene and halt the reported harassment and intimidation of petroleum marketers by state and local government officials.

Speaking at the association’s End-of-Year Meeting and the inauguration of special committees in Awka, Mr. Izukanne Chibuike, Chairman of PEDAN Anambra, emphasized the readiness of members to fully comply with all existing agreements with the Soludo administration, particularly concerning the timely payment of consolidated levies.

“Our members are committed to operating within the standards set by regulators in the sector, including the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and the Weight and Measures Department,” Chibuike said. “We urge marketers to uphold integrity, observe regulations, and engage constructively with authorities. All we request is fairness, equity, and an end to harassment, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests by agents claiming to represent the state or local government.”

Chibuike reiterated that under his leadership, petroleum marketers would maintain high ethical standards while contributing to the stability of petroleum supply across Anambra State. He stressed the association’s commitment to dialogue and cooperation, highlighting that a unified mode of levy collection would ensure compliance and efficiency.

Also present at the event, Mr. Chinedu Obigwe, Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Enugu Depot Community, commended PEDAN members for their unity and dedication to serving the public. He urged government authorities to support legitimate business operators rather than imposing hostile measures that undermine operations.

Mr. Tony Anyaso, responsible for oversight in Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu States, highlighted the need for encouragement of major stakeholders in the petroleum sector, noting that a supportive regulatory environment promotes economic growth. He congratulated Governor Soludo on his re-election and expressed optimism that the promised consolidation of levies would be fully implemented.

In his remarks, Mr. Tony Ifeanya, Commissioner for Petroleum Resources in Anambra State, represented by Permanent Secretary Mr. Bayo Ojeyinka, assured marketers that the government would continue to provide an enabling environment for operations. He praised petroleum marketers for ensuring regular product supply across the state, contributing to the local economy, and adhering to regulatory standards.

Ifeanya called on petroleum marketers to pursue dialogue and constructive engagement when addressing grievances, affirming that the government is listening and committed to addressing legitimate concerns. “The administration recognizes the critical role of petroleum dealers in the economy and will ensure their operations are conducted in a secure and fair environment,” he added.

Stone Reporters’ Observation: The call by PEDAN Anambra reflects a broader trend across Nigerian states where private sector stakeholders seek clarity, fairness, and structured regulatory practices. It underscores the delicate balance between government oversight and fostering a business-friendly climate, highlighting the importance of engagement, transparency, and adherence to legal frameworks in critical sectors such as petroleum distribution.

In conclusion, the association’s appeal to Governor Soludo marks a significant step in promoting dialogue between government authorities and petroleum marketers in Anambra State. With the administration’s reassurances and ongoing commitment to regulatory clarity, stakeholders anticipate that equitable solutions will be reached, enabling continued growth and stability in the state’s petroleum sector.
