Abuja — Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has publicly rejected recent reports linking him to the financing of terrorism in the country, describing the claims as unfounded and baseless.

In a statement issued through his legal and media representatives, Emefiele emphasised that at no point has any government agency, regulatory authority, or security outfit, either within Nigeria or internationally, accused him of involvement in terrorist activities or financing unlawful groups. He stressed that the allegations circulating on social media and certain media outlets are entirely speculative and politically motivated.

Emefiele further clarified that his professional and public service record, including his tenure as the nation’s central banker, demonstrates a consistent commitment to financial regulation, economic stability, and anti-money laundering efforts, all of which inherently oppose the funding of illicit activities. He noted that under his leadership, the CBN collaborated closely with domestic and international financial institutions to implement stringent measures aimed at detecting and preventing the diversion of funds to criminal and terrorist networks.

“I categorically deny any suggestion that I have provided financial support to terrorism. These claims are not only false but also undermine the credibility of individuals who have dedicated their careers to upholding national security and economic integrity,” Emefiele stated.

The former governor expressed concern that such unfounded reports could mislead the public and damage his reputation. He urged media outlets and individuals to exercise caution and verify information before publication, warning that reckless reporting can have far-reaching legal and social consequences.

Emefiele’s denial comes amid heightened scrutiny of public figures in Nigeria and underscores ongoing tensions surrounding misinformation in social and traditional media. Legal analysts note that while freedom of expression is guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution, deliberate false allegations against an individual, particularly involving serious criminal accusations, may constitute defamation, exposing the perpetrators to legal action.

In closing, Emefiele reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and the rule of law. He called on all concerned parties to respect due process and refrain from circulating unverified claims, stressing that any concerns regarding terrorism financing should be addressed through proper investigative and judicial channels rather than social media speculation.
