Lilu, a community in Imo State, has witnessed a severe disruption in education following escalating criminal activities linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The local school, which serves as a critical center for learning in the town, was forced to shut down after repeated threats and violent incidents made it unsafe for both students and school staff to continue operations.
The closure has left many families in distress, as children who once attended classes in Lilu are now compelled to seek alternative arrangements in neighboring towns. To ensure the continuity of education, students have been relocated to Ukpor, another town in Imo State, where local school authorities have accommodated them. Class schedules and facilities have been adjusted to integrate the displaced students, although the transition has not been without challenges.
A parent of one of the students said, “It is heartbreaking to see our children forced to leave their school because of insecurity. Ukpor is safer, and we are grateful for the support there, but the children have to travel farther and adjust to a new environment. This is not easy on them.”
Teachers in Ukpor have welcomed the displaced students and are working to ensure that their academic progress is not hindered. One teacher remarked, “We are committed to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for the children from Lilu. Safety is our priority, but we are also ensuring that they continue their education without falling behind.”
Local leaders in Imo State have condemned the violent activities of IPOB and ESN, calling on security agencies to take urgent measures to restore peace in Lilu. They warned that prolonged insecurity could have long-term negative consequences on the education, development, and wellbeing of children in affected communities.
The situation in Lilu reflects the wider impact of armed and criminal activities in parts of Imo State, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated security responses, community engagement, and sustained peacebuilding efforts to protect students and allow schools to operate safely once more.
