The Enugu State Police Command has launched an intensified security push across the state following the swift arrest of a 25-year-old suspect involved in a brutal one-chance abduction and robbery reported in the early hours of December 6. The incident, which unfolded along the busy Chime Avenue corridor in the New Haven axis of Enugu, has stirred renewed public concern over opportunistic crimes as the festive season approaches. Yet for authorities, the quick interception of the suspects marks both a warning to criminal groups and a renewed assurance to residents that law enforcement remains fully mobilised to maintain safety.
According to official details, the distress call that triggered the police response came just after 6 a.m., when officers attached to both the New Haven Division and the Distress Response Squad were alerted to an ongoing attack involving a young woman who had boarded what she believed was a regular commercial mini bus. Investigators later established that the vehicle, an unregistered white mini bus, was being operated by two men posing as legitimate transporters. Their method of operation aligned with the notorious one-chance pattern, in which unsuspecting passengers are targeted, assaulted and robbed after entering what appears to be a standard shuttle vehicle.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld for privacy and security reasons, boarded the vehicle at Fourth Dimension, a popular transit point along Chime Avenue. It was within minutes that the situation escalated violently. The suspects reportedly turned on her inside the vehicle, stabbing her during the struggle and subsequently forcing her out of the moving bus along the same route. Before fleeing, the attackers stole her mobile phone, ATM card and other personal items. The incident left the woman injured and disoriented, prompting concerned residents to provide immediate assistance and notify authorities.
Police sources confirmed that operatives moved rapidly once the distress call was logged, deploying teams to likely escape routes and adjoining locations. The suspects, attempting to use Independence Layout as a getaway corridor, were intercepted shortly after the attack. It was during this interception that officers arrested one of the two men, identified as Orlu Chukwuemeka. The second suspect managed to escape on foot, triggering a manhunt that police say remains active. The arrested suspect was immediately taken into custody for questioning, while the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where she received timely medical care. After stabilising, she was able to give a coherent account of the incident and positively identify the detained suspect as one of her assailants.
Authorities noted that the victim’s quick recovery and the immediate response of police teams played a central role in securing evidence and strengthening the case against the suspect. Medical personnel who attended to her confirmed that while she sustained injuries from both the stabbing and fall, her condition improved rapidly with prompt treatment. Following initial interrogation and review of the available evidence, the suspect was charged and arraigned before a competent court in Enugu. The court ordered that he be remanded in custody pending the continuation of the case. He assured that ongoing patrols, intelligence-led deployments and rapid response mechanisms would continue to operate at full capacity throughout December and beyond.
