Abuja, Nigeria — The nation mourns the passing of Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), who died on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at a hospital in Saudi Arabia at the age of 71, officials and legal bodies have confirmed. His death was announced in a condolence statement from the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS), which described his passing as “a monumental loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, the Muslim Ummah, and the nation at large.”

Justice Tanko Muhammad, who was born on 31 December 1953 in Giade, Bauchi State, served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from January 2019 until his retirement in June 2022. His tenure was marked by high‑profile judicial decisions and efforts to uphold the rule of law at the apex of the Nigerian judiciary. Prior to becoming CJN, he had been a Justice of the Supreme Court since 2007, following a long career on the bench that included service on the Court of Appeal

The funeral of such a distinguished jurist is expected to be of national significance. As head of the judiciary, Tanko Muhammad presided over critical constitutional matters and steered the Supreme Court through challenging cases during a dynamic period in Nigeria’s democratic history. His leadership was recognised as a blend of legal acumen and judicious restraint, and he was widely respected across the legal community for his contributions to the administration of justice.
