Lagos, Nigeria — At least two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a serious multi-vehicle collision involving a heavy SINO truck on a busy road in Lagos State, emergency responders and traffic officials reported. The crash unfolded on Wednesday along Iyana Meiran inward Meiran Road, near a Primary Health Centre, causing chaos, tragedy, and a swift response from authorities and rescue teams.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the fatal accident involved a Dangote-branded SINO truck, three tricycles, and a minibus — commonly referred to locally as a Korope. The impact of the collision was described as severe, leaving two occupants dead at the scene. At the time of reporting, the identities of the deceased had not been officially released, and investigations were underway to confirm their details.

LASTMA officials said the collision triggered panic in the area, prompting nearby residents and commuters to rush to the scene as emergency responders worked to secure the site. Police officers and traffic management personnel were deployed quickly, placing safety cones and cordoning off the stretch of the road to facilitate rescue efforts and manage the heavy buildup of vehicles.

Several victims who suffered injuries of varying severity were promptly evacuated to the nearest hospital for urgent medical treatment. Eyewitnesses described the aftermath as distressing, with mangled vehicles and distraught onlookers gathering along the roadside while first responders worked to extract the wounded and clear the debris.

Traffic along the corridor was severely disrupted in the wake of the collision, with motorists forced to take alternative routes as teams worked to restore normal movement. Lagos road users have raised concerns in recent months about safety on major and feeder roads, particularly involving large trucks whose heavy loads can magnify the effects of collisions and heighten the risk of loss of life and injuries.

Road traffic accidents remain a pressing public safety issue in Lagos and across Nigeria, with articulated vehicles frequently involved in deadly crashes. In other recent incidents on busy motorways such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, heavy trucks have been cited as major factors in chain-reaction accidents that have claimed families and multiple victims, underscoring ongoing challenges with enforcement of speed limits, vehicle maintenance, and driver behaviour.

The Lagos State authorities have reiterated calls for strict compliance with traffic regulations by all motorists, particularly drivers of large trucks and commercial vehicles. Officials emphasise that adherence to speed limits, regular vehicle inspections, and responsible driving are essential measures to reduce the frequency of fatal collisions and safeguard road users.

In the aftermath of the Iyana Meiran crash, LASTMA urged witnesses and anyone with additional information about the circumstances leading up to the collision to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. Traffic enforcement officers and emergency response teams continue to monitor the site, ensuring that injured victims receive care and that normal flow of traffic is restored as quickly and safely as possible.

As Lagos gears up for increased travel during the holiday season, authorities have highlighted the importance of road safety awareness campaigns and enhanced patrols to mitigate the risk of further tragedies on the state’s roads. The deadly impact of heavy trucks in collisions — such as the recent SINO truck crash — serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by high-speed, oversized vehicles, and the need for vigilant enforcement and public cooperation to protect lives.
