Tension has spread across parts of Katsina and Kano states following credible security reports that armed bandits have crossed between Danjanku and Dayi towns in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, heading eastward toward the Kano State axis.
The movement, which reportedly occurred just hours ago, has raised serious concern among residents and local authorities, given the history of violent attacks, kidnappings and raids linked to bandit groups operating across the Katsina–Kano corridor. Security sources familiar with developments in the area said the armed group was sighted moving through remote routes, believed to be aimed at accessing communities in Kano State.
As a result of the reported movement, residents of Gwarzo and Shanono Local Government Areas of Kano State have been urged to remain vigilant and heighten security awareness. Community leaders have begun sensitising residents to avoid unnecessary movement, particularly at night, while advising them to promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
The development has triggered anxiety in rural communities that have previously experienced bandit incursions, cattle rustling and abductions for ransom. Locals fear that the group’s movement could signal preparations for attacks on villages, highways or farmlands, especially as the dry season traditionally coincides with increased bandit activity in the region.
Calls have intensified for the Kano State Government to act swiftly by deploying additional security personnel to vulnerable border communities and known entry routes. Residents are also appealing to the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services and other security agencies to strengthen surveillance, conduct aerial reconnaissance where possible and block escape routes that criminals often exploit between states.
Security analysts note that the porous boundary between Katsina and Kano states has long posed a challenge, allowing armed groups to move with relative ease when under pressure in one location. They warn that without coordinated, cross-border security operations, bandits may continue to exploit these gaps to regroup, launch attacks and evade arrest.
So far, no official statement has been issued by the Kano State Government or security agencies confirming the report or outlining immediate countermeasures. However, residents say the absence of early action could embolden criminal elements and heighten the risk to lives and property.
Community vigilante groups in parts of Gwarzo and Shanono are said to be on standby, working with traditional rulers to monitor movement within their areas. Nonetheless, locals stress that community efforts alone are insufficient against heavily armed groups and must be backed by decisive government intervention.
As uncertainty lingers, residents across the affected areas remain on edge, hoping for a rapid and visible security response to prevent a possible escalation of violence. Many are urging authorities to act proactively rather than react after attacks occur, warning that the cost of inaction could be severe for already vulnerable rural communities.
