Two traders abducted earlier this month while travelling from Koro to Egbe for the popular Abu Market have been successfully rescued, bringing relief to residents and traders who rely heavily on the busy route for their livelihoods.
The Egbe Vigilante Group, in collaboration with the Kwara State Police Command, recovered the two remaining victims on Wednesday, December 16, 2025, after days of coordinated search-and-rescue operations across the area. The successful operation marks the end of an incident that had heightened anxiety among communities along the Koro–Egbe axis.
The traders were kidnapped on December 2, 2025, while making their way to Abu Market, a major commercial hub that attracts traders from surrounding towns and villages. News of their abduction quickly spread, triggering fear among commuters and market participants, many of whom depend on the route for daily economic activities.
Following the incident, local vigilantes intensified patrols and intelligence gathering, working closely with police operatives to track the movement of the abductors. Security sources said the joint effort combined local knowledge of the terrain with formal policing strategies, eventually leading to the recovery of the victims.
Authorities have so far withheld specific details about the circumstances surrounding the rescue, including whether arrests were made or if the abductors fled the area. Information on the medical condition of the rescued traders has also not been officially disclosed, although sources close to the operation indicated that they were found alive and reunited with security personnel.
Community leaders in Egbe and neighbouring areas have praised the collaboration between the vigilante group and the police, describing it as a positive example of how local security initiatives can complement formal law enforcement. They said the operation has helped to restore confidence among traders and residents who had become increasingly wary of travelling along the route.
The Koro–Egbe road is a vital link for rural commerce in the area, particularly on market days, and repeated security incidents have threatened economic activity. Traders say fear of kidnapping has in recent times disrupted movement, with some choosing to delay travel or avoid the road entirely.
Security officials have reiterated their commitment to sustaining patrols and improving surveillance along the axis to prevent a recurrence. Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and continue sharing timely information with both vigilante groups and the police to support ongoing security efforts.
As the rescued traders return to their families, many in the community see the outcome as a reassuring signal that coordinated security action can yield results. There are renewed calls for long-term measures to strengthen safety along major rural routes and ensure that traders and commuters can travel without fear.
