Anambra State, Nigeria — The Anambra Road Traffic Management Authority (ARTMA) has successfully removed an abandoned container truck that had been blocking a section of the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway, restoring smoother and safer traffic flow on the major federal highway. The action follows a series of traffic disruptions and deadly accidents that have underscored the ongoing dangers posed by stalled and accidented heavy vehicles along the busy corridor.

The container truck had reportedly been left immobile on the expressway, partially obstructing the service lane and contributing to hazardous driving conditions for motorists. Local traffic officials and ARTMA personnel mobilised to efficiently tow and clear the stranded vehicle, a move aimed at reducing congestion and preventing further crashes in the area. The swift operation was part of a broader enforcement effort under ARTMA’s ongoing road safety campaign, which includes heightened patrols and rapid removal of road obstructions to keep the expressway safe for commuters during the peak travel season.

The Onitsha–Enugu Expressway has in recent months been the site of several serious and fatal crashes, including a collision between a tipper truck and a passenger bus near the Nawfia axis that resulted in six deaths and multiple injuries, as confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The agency noted that reckless driving practices and loss of vehicle control contributed to such tragedies.

Officials from ARTMA said the clearance of the abandoned container is intended to pre‑empt additional incidents that often occur when heavy vehicles are left uncollected after breakdowns or crashes. They reiterated public warnings to drivers to maintain vehicle roadworthiness and comply with traffic laws, especially along high‑speed expressways like Onitsha–Enugu, where even short obstructions can escalate into severe accidents.

Commuters and stakeholders welcomed the action, stating that proactive removal of road hazards can significantly improve safety and traffic flow, particularly as travellers move between commercial and residential hubs in southeastern Nigeria.
