The Ekiti State Government has taken decisive disciplinary action against a surgeon involved in a controversial kidney operation at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado‑Ekiti, dismissing him from service following a detailed investigation into the procedure. This move, announced on 19 December 2025, comes after a seven‑member Panel of Enquiry was constituted to examine allegations made by Mr. Joshua Afolayan, who claimed he underwent an improper surgical procedure at the facility.

The panel, chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile, conducted a thorough review of actions leading up to and during the surgery, which originally aimed to address Afolayan’s reported kidney damage. The state government, acting on the report’s recommendations, ordered the immediate dismissal of the surgeon who had primary responsibility for the operation. All other members of the surgical team present during the procedure were suspended from duty for one month pending further administrative review, officials said.

The controversy began earlier this month when Afolayan publicly alleged that one of his kidneys had been unlawfully removed during surgery in October 2025, and that post‑operative complications had left him without adequate kidney function despite medical scans showing that the remaining kidney was healthy prior to the operation. His inability to pass urine after the surgery raised concerns about the conduct and outcome of the medical procedure, prompting widespread public interest and the state‑government initiated investigation. In addition to personnel actions, the Ekiti government announced that it will fund a new kidney transplant for Afolayan and cover his post‑transplant care and medical maintenance for two years, acknowledging the profound impact of the incident on his health and well‑being. The government also pledged a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments within EKSUTH to strengthen clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety protocols.

Ekiti’s Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, emphasised that while the state remains supportive of its health professionals, professional standards must be upheld and that decisive action would be taken wherever breaches occur. Dr. Filani added that the measures are part of a broader effort to restore public confidence in the state’s health system and ensure quality care for patients.

The panel’s report clarified that, despite earlier public speculation, the incident was not a case of organ harvesting for ritual or illicit purposes, but rather stemmed from surgical complications and questions about professional conduct. Nevertheless, the government’s response signals a firm stance on medical accountability and patient safety in Ekiti’s public health institutions.

The hospital and state health authorities said that enhancing clinical governance at EKSUTH is a priority, and that reforms will be implemented to prevent similar events in the future. Residents and health advocates have welcomed the government’s actions, viewing them as necessary steps toward safeguarding patient rights and elevating medical standards in the state’s flagship public hospital.
