Lagos, Nigeria — The family of Princess Adejoke Orelope‑Adefulire, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, is in deep mourning following the sudden death of her only son, Dr. Oluwafemi Olawale Adefulire, after a surgical procedure abroad. The tragic development has reverberated across political and social circles in Lagos and beyond.

Dr. Adefulire, a medical doctor based in the United Kingdom, reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday, December 10, 2025, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, shortly after undergoing an unspecified surgical operation. Details surrounding the nature of the procedure have not been publicly disclosed, and the family has not released a fuller medical explanation.

Born into a family with a long history of public service, the deceased was widely regarded as both a dedicated medical professional and a family man. He is survived by his wife and children, whose lives have been upended by this sudden loss. The news has been described by close associates as a “devastating blow” to the family, particularly for his mother, Princess Orelope‑Adefulire, who served as Lagos State Deputy Governor from 2011 to 2015 under Governor Babatunde Fashola and later held federal appointments.

Political leaders, party members and associates within the All Progressives Congress (APC) have expressed profound sorrow at the death. In an official condolence statement, the Lagos APC described the event as an “unimaginable tragedy” for parents, emphasising that such losses are among the most painful a family can endure. Party spokesperson Seye Oladejo noted the deep shock felt throughout the party’s ranks, underscoring Princess Orelope‑Adefulire’s respected standing within the Lagos political community.

The loss has also prompted an outpouring of sympathies from civic leaders, professional colleagues and members of the public, many of whom have taken to social media to pay tribute to the deceased’s contributions as a healthcare professional and his role within the community. Many emphasised that his passing is a reminder of the fragility of life, even for those accustomed to navigating global medical systems.

Princess Adejoke Orelope‑Adefulire is widely known in Nigerian public life not only for her tenure as deputy governor but also for her work in social development. Beyond elective office, she served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a position she has held across successive administrations, reflecting her long‑standing engagement in governance and civic advocacy.

As the family prepares for final funeral arrangements, which have not yet been announced, many observers have noted how deeply the tragedy has affected not just immediate relatives but the broader network of professionals and political allies who knew Dr. Adefulire. For the broader community, the news has been met with an outpouring of empathy and shared grief, as Nigerians from varied backgrounds extend condolences to the grieving family.

The circumstances of his passing in Dubai — a global hub for medical procedures among Nigerians seeking specialised care — also touches on a broader, ongoing conversation about medical tourism and healthcare access, but family statements to date have remained focused on paying tribute and honouring a life devoted to service and family, rather than dwelling on broader systemic issues.

As friends, colleagues and compatriots continue to extend support and sympathy, the legacy of Dr. Oluwafemi Olawale Adefulire will be remembered for his contributions to medicine, his commitment to family, and his link to a political lineage that has shaped public life in Lagos and beyond.
