Minna, Nigeria — Two people lost their lives after suspected armed robbers ambushed a truck along the Doma–Yelwa Road in Nasarawa State, heightening concerns over road safety and violent crime in the region. The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the incident and launched an investigation to apprehend the attackers.

According to police sources, the attack occurred late Wednesday night on the Gadar Bala section of the road, a route frequently used by commercial vehicles and travellers. The truck, reportedly transporting goods and passengers from Rukubi town, was ambushed by unidentified gunmen around 11:30 p.m., who opened fire on the vehicle without warning.

Among the victims were the driver, Yusuf Dogara, a resident of Madawaki Ward in Doma Local Government Area, and a female passenger identified as Nano Gideon, from Akaba Agyaragu in Obi Local Government Area. Both were fatally wounded in the assault and were later pronounced dead on arrival at Doma General Hospital, where their bodies were taken for autopsy.

Other passengers who sustained injuries in the attack were rushed to medical facilities and are reported to be in stable condition, local sources said. In the aftermath, patrol teams, assisted by vigilante groups and local hunters, responded quickly to the scene, securing the area and attending to survivors.

The assailants fled the scene before security operatives arrived, leaving behind chaos and mounting fear among communities that rely on the road for movement of people and commerce. In response, police have urged residents and travellers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could help authorities track and arrest those responsible.

The Doma–Yelwa corridor has increasingly been cited by residents as a crime hotspot, with travellers and motorists frequently reporting harassment, robbery and violent confrontations. Analysts say such attacks underscore broader insecurity challenges in Nasarawa and neighbouring states, where armed groups exploit poorly secured rural roads and limited patrol resources to target unsuspecting commuters.

In its statement, the police command reaffirmed its commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and strengthening patrols along known trouble spots. “We appeal to members of the public to assist by providing credible information that can lead to the arrest of these criminals,” the command said, emphasising that collaborative efforts between security agencies and communities are vital in curbing the rise in armed robberies.

As investigations continue and security deployments on the Doma–Yelwa road are reviewed, the tragic loss of life in this attack has renewed calls from residents and local leaders for enhanced protection, particularly during night travel, to safeguard civilians and commercial transport operations across the state’s road network.
