Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Maiduguri to begin a planned three‑state tour that will take him through Borno, Bauchi and Lagos, combining developmental inaugurations, diplomatic outreach and a series of end‑of‑year engagements before the Christmas and New Year period. The visit, which began on Saturday, December 20, 2025, underscores the federal government’s focus on consolidating infrastructure gains, fostering national unity and reinforcing official ties with state governments and communities.

President Tinubu’s aircraft touched down at General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, at about 12:55 p.m., where he was received by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum alongside other dignitaries including the governors of Katsina, Adamawa and Delta states, and senior federal officials.

The president’s itinerary in Borno reflects a mix of developmental, social and cultural functions. Upon arrival, he immediately inaugurated the newly expanded Maiduguri International Airport terminal and VIP wing, a key federal and state government collaboration aimed at bolstering air transport capacity, improving passenger experience and enhancing the strategic importance of northeastern Nigeria’s principal aviation hub. In addition to the airport project, Mr. Tinubu is scheduled to commission other major infrastructure initiatives in the transport and education sectors — including roads and school facilities executed by the Borno State Government in partnership with the federal government — as part of efforts to support regional development and widen access to quality services.

Alongside his official development duties, President Tinubu’s visit also carries a social dimension. He is expected to attend the Nikkah and wedding ceremony of Sadeeq Sheriff, son of former Borno State Governor and Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and his bride, Hadiza Kam Salem. The attendance at this high‑profile family event signals the administration’s recognition of cultural and societal ties that complement formal governance responsibilities.

Following the engagements in Borno, the president will travel to Bauchi State to pay his respects and offer condolences to the state government and the family of the late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, a respected Islamic cleric and spiritual leader who passed away on November 27, 2025. This segment of the tour emphasises national cohesion and unity at a time of both mourning and reflection.

The final leg of the tour will take Tinubu to Lagos State, where he is slated to spend the end‑of‑year holidays, participate in cultural festivities and serve as guest of honour at the Eyo Festival on December 27 at Tafawa Balewa Square. The festival — an annual celebration of Lagos heritage — will also honour notable figures including the president’s late mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, and former Lagos governors Lateef Jakande and Michael Otedola

Security has been heightened across Maiduguri in anticipation of the president’s presence, with the Borno State Police Command deploying tactical teams, surveillance squads and Explosive Ordnance Disposal units and instituting temporary traffic restrictions to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the visit. Residents have been urged to cooperate with security personnel to facilitate a hitch‑free itinerary.

Analysts say the tour comes at a critical moment, reflecting an effort by the federal government to reinforce visible investment in regions that have faced security and infrastructural challenges, while also engaging communities throughout the country on cultural and diplomatic fronts ahead of the holiday season. Observers note that such tours serve a dual purpose — stimulating regional development and bolstering the social and political fabric that binds Nigeria’s diverse states.

Overall, President Tinubu’s three‑state tour is being framed as a blend of infrastructure delivery, national unity initiatives and high‑profile social engagements, marking a significant capstone to the government’s activities as 2025 draws to a close.
