Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria — Tension gripped parts of Ondo State on Saturday after suspected gunmen opened fire at a police checkpoint in the Ipele Junction area of Owo Local Government, injuring two officers and a female civilian in a brazen attack on law enforcement personnel. The incident prompted a swift response by the Ondo State Police Command, which managed to arrest one suspect at the scene as investigations continue.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Ondo State, DSP Jimoh Kazeem, around three attackers riding a motorcycle approached the Safer Highway Patrol checkpoint on Saturday while officers were on duty. Without warning, the gunmen opened fire, striking two policemen and a woman identified only as Taiwo, who was hit by stray bullets.
“The officers were targeted while discharging their lawful duties,” Kazeem said in a statement. He noted that the operatives fought back effectively, forcing the attackers to flee the scene before they could be overpowered, and quickly provided medical attention to the wounded.
In the aftermath of the exchange, one of the suspected gunmen, identified as Nwabali, was arrested at the location, and the motorcycle used during the attack was recovered by police. According to the PPRO, the suspect has already given statements that are assisting investigators in identifying and tracking down the remaining fleeing accomplices.
All the victims of the attack were immediately rushed to a hospital, where they are reportedly receiving medical care. The command noted that none of the injuries sustained so far have been reported as life‑threatening, but added that further updates on their conditions will be provided as the situation evolves.
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, condemned the attack as “tragic and reprehensible” but commended the quick response and bravery shown by the Safer Highway Patrol team, saying their professionalism prevented a more severe outcome. The Commissioner also reiterated the command’s commitment to enhancing security across highways and communities, especially as the festive season approaches.
Security analysts note that attacks on checkpoints, often aimed at undermining public confidence in policing and creating fear, remain a challenge in several parts of the country. Such incidents typically prompt intensified patrols, increased intelligence gathering and broader coordination between police units and other security agencies to prevent similar attacks.
The suspect in custody is expected to be charged to court once investigations are concluded, as the police continue efforts to arrest additional members of the group responsible. Residents in and around Owo and Ipele have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies to support ongoing operations and prevent further violence.
