Abuja, Nigeria — A tragic domestic dispute in Ogun State has left one man dead after an argument over a small debt escalated into lethal violence, according to police reports. The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Lekan Lasisi was arrested following the fatal shooting of his stepbrother in the Abule Tuntun area of Odeda Local Government.

The incident, which occurred on December 19, 2025, reportedly began as a heated argument over a ₦4,000 debt the deceased owed — a sum that family members said had repeatedly caused friction and embarrassment within the household. Lasisi and his stepbrother had been discussing the matter when the situation deteriorated.

According to an interrogation video shared on social media by a local user, Lasisi explained that his stepbrother had been struggling with personal problems and was frequently in debt, prompting repeated complaints from creditors to the family. On the day of the shooting, one of these disputes reportedly came to a head when a creditor confronted them about the small outstanding amount.

The argument allegedly intensified when the deceased stepped forward with a cutlass, prompting Lasisi to produce a firearm. In his account, Lasisi said the weapon accidentally discharged during the confrontation, striking his stepbrother and instantly fatally wounding him. He insisted that he had no intention to kill and that the death was not premeditated.

“I do not intend to kill him because I can’t even say how it happened,” Lasisi said in the video statement, pleading for mercy from authorities. He highlighted personal circumstances, including an elderly and ailing mother and another sibling who is bedridden, as part of his appeal for leniency.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babseyi Oluseyi, confirmed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran, Abeokuta, where detectives are continuing their investigation. Formal charges and next steps will depend on the outcome of the SCID inquiry.

The incident has fuelled wider conversation about domestic disputes and firearm safety in Nigeria, where disagreements over even small sums of money have, in rare cases, led to tragic outcomes. Community leaders and civil society advocates have also highlighted concerns about easy access to firearms and the importance of conflict resolution mechanisms that prevent such violence.

As police continue their work on the case, the focus now turns to how the legal process will unfold, particularly given Lasisi’s claim of accidental discharge. Authorities have reiterated that any use of a firearm resulting in loss of life will be thoroughly examined under Nigerian law to determine culpability, intent and appropriate charges.
