Security operatives attached to the Tactical Squad at Elemoro have arrested fourteen suspected traffic robbers within the last two weeks at various locations along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, reinforcing ongoing efforts to improve safety on one of Lagos State’s busiest transport corridors.
Police sources confirmed that the suspects were apprehended during sustained intelligence-led patrols and targeted operations carried out in response to increasing complaints from motorists and commuters about attacks, harassment, and robbery along the expressway, particularly during early morning and late-night hours. The arrests were made at different flashpoints where criminals were believed to operate, exploiting traffic congestion and poorly lit stretches of the road.
According to the Command, the suspects are believed to be part of loosely organised groups that prey on unsuspecting road users, attacking vehicles stuck in traffic and dispossessing occupants of phones, cash, and other valuables. Preliminary investigations indicate that some of the suspects operated with weapons and used diversionary tactics to create panic before launching attacks.
The police described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in ongoing security operations along the Lekki–Epe axis, an area that has experienced rapid urban expansion, increased vehicular movement, and rising security challenges in recent years. Officials noted that the expressway is critical to economic activity in Lagos, linking residential estates, commercial hubs, and tourist destinations, making enhanced security a top priority.
A senior police officer familiar with the operation said the success recorded by the Tactical Squad reflects a renewed focus on proactive policing rather than reactive responses. “The strategy involves sustained patrols, stop-and-search operations, surveillance, and collaboration with local communities. These arrests send a strong signal that criminal activities along this corridor will not be tolerated,” the officer said.
Residents and regular users of the expressway have welcomed the development, describing it as a long-awaited relief. Several commuters interviewed expressed hope that the arrests would translate into lasting improvements, noting that fear of robbery had altered travel patterns for many people, forcing some to avoid certain hours or routes entirely.
The police command reiterated its commitment to maintaining pressure on criminal elements and urged members of the public to remain vigilant. Road users were advised to report suspicious movements promptly and cooperate with security personnel when approached. The Command also assured residents that investigations into the arrested suspects are ongoing and that those found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Authorities further disclosed that additional deployments and operational adjustments are being considered to consolidate recent gains and prevent the resurgence of criminal activity along the expressway. These measures, officials said, form part of a broader security strategy aimed at safeguarding lives and property across Lagos State.
As urban growth continues to stretch existing infrastructure and security resources, law enforcement agencies have emphasized the importance of community partnership, timely intelligence, and consistent patrols in sustaining public safety. The arrest of the fourteen suspects, police say, underscores their resolve to reclaim the Lekki–Epe Expressway from criminal elements and restore confidence among road users.
