ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Police Force has formally suspended the nationwide enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, citing compliance with an interim court order that restrains the police from proceeding with the directive pending further judicial determination.
The decision follows an announcement made by the Force on December 15, 2025, in which it declared that enforcement of the tinted glass regulations would resume from January 2, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen public safety and internal security. The policy, which requires motorists to obtain official permits for tinted vehicle windows, was presented by the police as a security measure aimed at improving visibility and curbing criminal activity.
However, developments took a legal turn days later. On December 17, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force was served with an interim order of court in Suit No. HOR/FHR/M/31/2025, restraining it from enforcing the policy. The order directs that enforcement must be halted pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or until the interim order is formally vacated by the court.
In response, the Police Force confirmed that it has entered appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and filed a formal application seeking the vacation of the interim order. The court has since adjourned the case to January 20, 2026, when further proceedings are expected to take place.
According to the Force, the suspension of enforcement is strictly in line with its constitutional obligation to respect judicial authority. As a result, the implementation of the tinted glass permit policy has been placed on hold nationwide until the court delivers its ruling.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the rule of law, stressing that while security remains a priority, all actions must align with legal and constitutional frameworks. He noted that the Force would continue to rely on lawful and intelligence-driven strategies to tackle security challenges and protect lives and property across the country.
Police authorities also assured members of the public that they would be kept informed of further developments, including clear guidance on the status of the tinted glass permit policy once the court reaches a decision. The Force emphasised that its actions are guided by the overriding interest of public order and national security, while maintaining respect for due process.
The announcement has brought temporary relief to motorists who had expressed concerns about potential harassment and enforcement excesses, even as the legal contest over the policy continues. Attention is now focused on the court’s next sitting later in January, which is expected to clarify the future of the controversial enforcement plan.
