Two Ambrose Alli University Medical Laboratory Science Students Kidnapped in Ekpoma, Appeal for Help Intensifies
EKPOMA, EDO STATE — Fear and anxiety have gripped the Ambrose Alli University (AAU) community following the abduction of two students from the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science in Emaudo, Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to information circulated by the Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association (MLSSA), AAU Chapter, the victims — Mr. Nimlessite Akhabue Favor and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Odiahi — were kidnapped on Wednesday, January 1, 2026, while entering their residence in the Emaudo axis of Ekpoma. The incident occurred in the evening hours, catching residents off guard and further deepening concerns over worsening insecurity around student residential areas.
In an official emergency notice dated January 2, 2026, the MLSSA confirmed the abduction and issued a public appeal for urgent assistance, prayers, and support, stressing that the situation has placed immense emotional and financial strain on the victims’ family. The association disclosed that the kidnappers are demanding ₦30 million ransom for Mr. Favor and ₦20 million for Mrs. Odiahi, a sum the family is reportedly struggling to raise.
“The family is doing everything within its capacity, but the demand is overwhelming,” the statement read, calling on security agencies, government authorities, and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene swiftly to ensure the safe release of the abducted victims.
The development has sparked widespread concern among students, parents, and residents of Ekpoma, a university town that has witnessed repeated incidents of kidnapping and armed attacks in recent months. Students say the abduction highlights persistent security gaps, particularly in off-campus residential areas where many students live due to limited hostel accommodation.
Student leaders and concerned residents have urged the Edo State Government and security agencies to intensify patrols, deploy intelligence-driven operations, and dismantle criminal networks operating around Ekpoma and adjoining communities. Some students also called for urgent engagement between university management and security authorities to improve safety measures for staff and students.
As of the time of this report, no official statement has yet been issued by the Edo State Police Command, though sources within the community say security operatives have been alerted and discreet efforts are underway. The MLSSA has continued to mobilise awareness, prayers, and support, emphasising that every effort counts toward bringing the victims home alive.
The abduction has once again renewed debate over the safety of students in Nigerian tertiary institutions, particularly those living off campus, as families and colleagues anxiously await positive news on the fate of the kidnapped victims.
