Maiduguri, Nigeria — Security forces in Borno State have made a significant discovery in the ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and insurgent activity in the region. Operatives of the Borno State Police Command unearthed a concealed stockpile of 912 rounds of B32 API type (7.62 x 51mm) ammunition in the Kumshe Jamba Mari area of Maiduguri, the state capital.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nahum Daso, the cache was discovered on January 4, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., during a targeted operation led by the Divisional Police Officer of Lamisula Division. The operation was launched following credible intelligence pointing to the presence of concealed munitions in the area.
Upon locating the hidden ammunition, standard security protocols were immediately enacted. The Department of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was deployed to secure the scene, which was professionally cordoned off to ensure public safety. The recovered items were safely removed and are now in the custody of the police command as investigations proceed.
The recovered ammunition, described as military-grade and of significant calibre, is typically associated with sophisticated firearms such as automatic rifles, raising concerns about its potential diversion into the hands of criminal or insurgent elements. The ongoing probe aims to determine both the source of the ammunition and its intended use, as well as to identify and apprehend those responsible for its concealment.
The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Naziru Abdulmajid, has commended members of the public whose timely information helped facilitate the seizure. He reinforced the importance of community cooperation in intelligence-led policing, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities that could compromise security.
This discovery comes amid intensified security operations in Borno State, which has faced a protracted insurgency and recurrent violence over the past decade. The region remains a focus of national and regional counter-insurgency efforts, with combined military, police and paramilitary operations working to deny armed groups freedom of movement and capacity to resupply.
In a related development, troops of Operation Hadin Kai recently recovered an additional cache of high-calibre ammunition concealed in a drainage channel in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri, further illustrating the scale of hidden weapons and munitions within the state. That operation yielded 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads and live rounds recovered by military personnel in conjunction with police explosive disposal teams.
Security analysts say that such recoveries are indicative of both the adaptability of illicit networks operating in northeastern Nigeria and the ongoing challenge faced by security agencies in preventing the stockpiling and distribution of arms that could fuel further violence. They emphasise that intelligence-driven operations and community engagement remain critical components of efforts to dismantle supply chains and reduce the capacity of armed groups to threaten civilians and state stability.
The Borno State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to securing the state and safeguarding lives and property. The command’s leadership has promised ongoing efforts to trace the full extent of weapons proliferation and ensure that recovered ammunition does not fall into the wrong hands.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to intensify patrols and surveillance in areas deemed susceptible to arms concealment, working alongside residents and other security agencies to mitigate the risks posed by illegal arms within the community.
